At Silkie Gardens Rose Nursery in Kilmore, we have found that we are able to consistently produce healthy roses just as nature intended … naturally!

Our success lies in ensuring the nutrition of our plants is in balance as well as being adequate, we work with nature using organic based products.

Our aim is to grow plants with high levels of vigour rather than trying to make them grow fast. The key ingredient in our program starting from potting is our superior quality organic based fertilizer with trace elements. This fertilizer creates the natural balance required to achieve the high vigour and disease resistance needed for better colour, length of flowering season and better vase life.

To ensure consistent growth, the fertilizer should be applied year round at the rate of one half-handful
(¼ cup) per plant every 8 weeks.

As part of our ongoing maintenance program, we use 'NATRAKELP' naturally processed liquid seaweed and 'ECO-OIL' botanical oil concentrate made from Canola, eucalyptus and Melaleuca plants. Our recipe is simple and safe …

To 5 Litres of water add: 2-4 capfuls NATRAKELP and 1 capful ECO-OIL

Mix well and spray or pour over leaves to run-off no less than once a month or more frequently at critical period of the season, or if disease or pests begin to appear.

WE RECOMMEND APPLICATION BE CARRIED OUT PRIOR TO 10:00am

We work on the basis that the healthier the plant, the greater its natural resistance to disease and pests and tolerance to stress. A healthy, well nourished plant will grow well without being pushed.

10 Steps to Successful Rose Growing

1
.Buy only quality plants - quality is a two year old, vibrant and healthy looking plant on
virus tested understock with growing instructions and a guarantee.

2.Plant the roses into well drained soil - clay is great, especially when blended with quality compost - the soil you have is preferred to imported soil blends.

3.Feed roses regularly once every 8 weeks with balanced organic plant food - we use and recommend an organic fertiliser with trace elements.

4.Plant roses only in a sunny position with a minimum of 5 hours of sun daily - roses are guaranteed to flower profusely and maintain health and vigour.

5.Roses love wind and good air flow to maintain healthy, disease resistant foliage.
Companion planting with annuals, perennials and bulbs is encouraged but needs to be maintained.

6.Mulch with lucerne, pea straw or the pine bark products. Mulch maintains soil moisture, increases worm and microbe production and reduces weeds.

7.We recommend a foliar feed program once a month with Natrakelp liquid seaweed and
Eco-oil which will increase strength in the foliage to combat pest and disease problems.

8.Deep soak rose plants with 20 litres (2 buckets) per bush once per week to establish.
A soaker system with timer will soak to the root zone and save water ... roses are water wise and don't like wet feet!

9.Prune regularly trim as flowers finish summer prune by one third and winter prune older wood … always use sharpened and clean secateurs and wear good gloves for confidence
and comfort.

10.Take time to smell, love and enjoy the roses in your garden!

Why not try it our way? … 100% organically, naturally!!
It cannot be overstressed that to ensure the longevity of your standard roses, they must be securely staked - the bamboo stake which you buy with the rose is totally inadequate over the long term.
We use and recommend steel stakes! The stake should be 1.8 metres long which will allow between 20-30 cms of stake to protrude beyond the graft - very important when the head becomes established because it offers support, especially in high winds.

Staking standard and weeping roses should be done at the time of planting!!!! Don't make this very important task a 'gunna do' job because you cannot replace an established standard rose overnight.
Please heed this warning and factor the cost of the stakes into the total budget for your garden plans!
Besides, have you noticed how fabulous standard roses look in a garden where they've been beautifully staked? For a minor cost and effort, make your garden stand out and make people stop and take a second look … you'll love the results!
