It's a real Love Story ......spanning the past 25 years ...
overwhelmingly, a love for the world's favourite flower - the rose!

It's about a passionate desire to assist in creating beautiful spaces for the lovely people who share our love of the rose.

It's a story about family ...   we have enjoyed the pleasure of working at different times with each of our four beautiful children and each other; members of our extended family have worked with us over the years - sometimes challenging but always immensely rewarding.

It's a story about the environment ...   the reality that using an extremely effective and economic organic management program ensures that whilst growing lovely roses you too are taking measures to enjoy working with Mother Nature, caring about our environment and relishing the rewards!

It's a story about you ...   you want to grow a rose and know that you're buying the best rose from a highly reputable grower who cares about you!
Silkie Gardens is renowned for its Silkie Fowls, which provide great entertainment for children and adults alike. They roam amongst over 14,000 roses in pots, all ready to be planted in gardens throughout Australia. People also come from far and wide to this tourist attraction to enjoy a varied range of food in the Cafe. With dishes of Dutch, Italian, Indian and Australian cuisine for you, provided in a menu presented for you by Chef Ben and Manager/Waitress Justine
SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENT
Silkie Gardens has obtained approval as a Sustainable Garden Centre, which means that all staff has had the appropriate training, so we can advise you on the best methods available to save water, avoiding environmentally damaging pesticides and how to compost your waste.
SERVICES TO CLUBS AND GROUPS
If you belong to a Garden Club, Probus Club or some other group who organize guest speakers please don't hesitate to contact us here at the nursery and we will be more than happy to make arrangements to visit your Club … most entertaining events!
Over the years we have done presentations at Garden Clubs all around Victoria and I'm pleased to say we were the guest speakers at the inauguration meetings of Probus Clubs at Kilmore, Broadford and Whittlesea. Our presentation covers not only roses and the history of our business but soil rejuvenation, compost making, worm breeding, watering issues in gardens and general gardening information - we take the mystique out of rose growing - make it fun and rewardingly simple!
GUARANTEE
All roses sold from the Nursery come with a 3 month guarantee, from the time of purchase.
Rose plants sold here are grown on virus tested root stock, making them very drought tolerant, thus they will last for years in our Australian environment. All plants are Australian grown in the famous Coonawarra Grape growing area of South Australia and in winter, they are potted in recycled plastic pots ready to plant in gardens everywhere.
One day, we'll write a book and tell you the whole story … in the meantime, enjoy your roses!

Who are we..........
P.S.: With such a busy time all around us, we need, now more than ever, the solace of the garden as a space to unwind, reflect and be peaceful ... maybe get our hands dirty and allow Nature to nurture us.
Recent research findings indicate that ...

" ..
. gardening is actually saving people's lives and extending them. Not only is gardening now considered to be of medical benefit in terms of exercise, it also involves contact with plant life, increasing the benefits even further. For example, an hour of gardening a day can reduce your risk of dying prematurely by 28% and help reduce coronary heart disease and other chronic illnesses.
Just thinking about plants affects our physiology for the better. Simply visualizing images of nature scenes induces significantly greater relaxation ... Caring for plants has often been found to be so engrossing that people lose track of time: soft fascination at work! ... "

The above quotation was taken from a truly interesting book about how television is damaging our lives and what we can do about it .. "Remotely Controlled" by Dr. Aric Sigman is an interesting read and we recommend this book, especially to parents
